Summary
Under the general supervision of the Chief Estimator, the Senior Civil Estimator is tasked with preparing cost estimates for conventionally bid projects, design-build projects, and other alternative delivery project (ADP) models. The Senior Civil Estimator is a crucial player in the company’s mission to achieve greatness, fostering an entrepreneurial spirit that encourages continuous improvement, and embracing innovation and accountability.
As a Senior Civil Estimator, You Will:
- Formulate and implement a strategic and competitive approach for each tender.
- Lead the creation of comprehensive, precise, and timely estimates, including bid document preparation, proposal drafting, and correspondence development.
- Engage in and comprehend design/build, ADP, and build-to-spec contracts.
- Interpret project drawings, specifications, supplier and subcontractor quotes, proposals, and related documentation accurately and promptly.
- Develop initial and draft project schedules.
- Ensure precise quantity take-offs from project drawings and specifications.
- Create detailed estimates from foundational principles using historical cost data and past experiences, utilizing current estimating software systems in alignment with policies, procedures, and best practices.
- Request quotations and proposals from suppliers and subcontractors, either independently or with assistance from a junior estimator.
- Conduct peer reviews of estimates prepared by other estimators.
- Lead, mentor, and train junior estimating and clerical staff.
- Support the project management team in forecasting and calculating potential additional costs in claim situations or scope changes.
- Manage and distribute bid documents, including addendums, to other estimators.
- Follow up on proposals submitted to customers.
- Build and sustain relationships with both existing and new suppliers and subcontractors.
- Participate in site visits, pre-bid, and pre-award meetings as required by the owner or engineer.
- Assist the project management team in project initiation by chairing post-award meetings and attending pre-construction meetings.
- Negotiate major purchase and subcontract agreements, and prepare and review purchase orders and subcontract documents with project managers.
- Collect, assess, and document historical cost data, as well as construction procedures and methods.
- Aid in the maintenance and enhancement of the estimating database and software, including analyzing feedback from field operations on actual work performed.
Requirements
What You’ll Bring
- A minimum of 7-10 years of continuous experience as a civil estimator in heavy civil transportation and bridge projects, complemented by additional project management experience, is essential.
- Successful completion of post-secondary education with a degree or diploma in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Quantity Surveying, Estimating, or a related field of study and/or relevant experience.
- Proficient in reading and interpreting construction-related documents, including plans, specifications, and other technical materials.
- Strong time management skills and the ability to develop plans to meet multiple deadlines in a high-pressure work environment.
- Experience with Heavy Bid estimating software or comparable systems is a valuable asset.
- Essential proficiency in using MS Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint), with knowledge of Bluebeam and scheduling software being highly desirable.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively within a team setting.
- Flexible and adaptable to adjust work schedules as required to meet deadlines.
- Possession of a valid driver’s license and the ability to travel as necessary.
